9 Foods You Shouldn’t Store In Your Freezer

If you don’t want to lose a lot of their nutritional properties, you shouldn’t store some of your foods in your freezer. Better to buy them in small quantities and eat them fresh.

Storing food in the correct way is one of the main keys to reducing food waste and to eating well. The freezer is therefore a good option. 

Knowing how to properly store food requires a little patience. Nowadays, we can take advantage of the low temperatures that refrigerators and other freezers offer us.

These household appliances allow us to keep foods that have already been prepared and extend the shelf life of certain foods that we buy in the supermarket.

But unfortunately, not all foods are suitable for these preservation methods, especially when it comes to freezing.

While it is certain that we can freeze a lot of things, some foods lose their flavors and textures when subjected to extreme temperatures.

1. Green salads

The best thing to do to enjoy the fresh flavor of green salads is to prepare the exact amount you want to consume.

However, if you have a little left over, you should definitely avoid freezing them. The salad leaves will soften and lose their taste.

We recommend that you wash your salads well and dry them with absorbent paper. You must then place them in a plastic bag that you will store in the lower part of your refrigerator.

Consume them the next day so that they do not rot.

2. Milk

It is possible to store milk in the freezer under certain conditions, depending on the use you want to make of this product.

If your intention is to drink it as you might be used to, do not freeze it as the extreme temperatures form lumps on the surface of the milk.

However, if you want to freeze it to incorporate into your desserts, pies, or any other recipe, you can do that without a problem.

3. Whole eggs in the freezer

As you already know, liquids that solidify with the freezing process take up more space than when they are in their original state.

Eggs are no exception to this rule. Submitting them to a conservation process is a mistake not to be made.

The liquid they contain will solidify, take up more space and therefore break the shell. The eggs can then explode and emit a stench.

To keep them, the best thing to do is to store them in the lower part of the refrigerator or in a cool corner of the kitchen.

4. Sour cream

Crème fraîche changes taste and turns when placed in the freezer. The result is very unpleasant and can give a harsh flavor to the preparations in which you are going to incorporate it.

The best thing to do is to take a good look at the storage labels on your creams and ingest them as quickly as possible.

5. Yogurt

Plain or Greek yogurt changes in texture and flavor when stored in the freezer for several days.

While some varieties of yoghurt retain a decent taste, most of them end up losing all of their properties.

6. Cheese

Cheese is another dairy product that does not tolerate freezing very well. The hard varieties take on a sandy texture while the soft ones become spongy.

By defrosting them, you will obtain products that are very difficult to incorporate into other recipes. In addition, they will hardly taste any more.

7. Eggs in snow in the freezer

Have you baked a cake and still have some snowy eggs? If this is the case, it is better to reuse them by preparing a mask for the face or for the hair.

If you try to keep them in the freezer, the only thing you’re going to get is something with a sticky texture. In addition, it will be completely devoid of properties.

When thawing them, they can give off a bad smell. This will definitely ruin your cake or whatever recipe you wanted to incorporate them into.

8. Potatoes

Potatoes contain a large amount of water which will crystallize if you place them in the freezer.

If you decide to reuse them after freezing them, they will be soft and will not have the same flavor.

If you still want to do this, it is best to cook them in a little water first.

The best way to keep them in perfect condition is to place them in a cool, dry place, protected from light.

9. Coffee in the freezer

Once frozen, coffee loses all of its flavor. In addition, extreme cold disintegrates most of its nutritional properties.
